The pub is housed in a former canal warehouse nearby to the junction of two canals. Each of them had different size locks and boats. The Calder and Hebble Navigation opened in 1770 and linked Sowerby Bridge to Wakefield in the east.

A nearby information board has details of the area and tells us that in 1804 the Rochdale Canal was built to connect Sowerby Bridge to Manchester in the west.

Because of the differing lock sizes a number of warehouses were built at this location to enable goods on the canal boats to be trans shipped between the boats.

These days there is no commercial traffic left on the canal but the canals are popular with leisure boaters.

The pub sign is therefore very appropriate for a pub at a busy and popular canal site.
