Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum is Queensland Museum’s next big blockbuster

A MAJOR exhibition about gladiators is Queensland Museum’s next big blockbuster show and before you ask, no, it has nothing to do with Russell Crowe.
But Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum, which opens on June 23, owes Crowe a debt of gratitude for resurrecting interest into these ancient combatants.
Ridley Scott’s 2000 film Gladiator, which starred Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, certainly revived public interest in gladiators.
The Queensland Museum show, which launches today with a fight demo by a local historical reenactment group, will be a fascinating glimpse into the gory world of gladiatorial combat but one that will be suitable for families. It will have an interactive element where you and the kids can play gladiators and there will be helmets and swords to try out but not real ones.
The exhibition will feature an array of amazing ancient artefacts including some very cool helmets, according to Queensland Museum CEO and director Professor Suzanne Miller.
“This will be the first time many of these artefacts have been displayed in Australia and will give visitors to the Queensland Museum a unique opportunity to view more than 120 objects up close,” Professor Miller said.
“As well as viewing these extraordinary antiquities, which include pieces of Rome’s famed Colosseum, visitors can learn the story of these armed athletes though interactive games and displays of historical armour.”
Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum will run from June 23 to January 28, 2018.
