L'église Saint-Étienne est un édifice religieux catholique sis à Waha, un village de l’Ardenne belge, aujourd’hui rattaché à la commune de Marche-en-Famenne en province de Luxembourg (Région wallonne de Belgique). Consacrée en 1050 l’édifice - rare exemple d’art roman typiquement mosan - est église paroissiale de Waha.

Une pierre commémorative de la consécration1. et de l’église par le prince-évêque de Liège Théoduin de Bavière porte la date du 20 juin (de l’année de l’incarnation du Seigneur) 1050.

Au milieu du XIe siècle un bâtiment préexistant - sans doute seigneurie médiévale - est aménagé en chapelle privée avec l’adjonction d’un sanctuaire et de deux petites nefs latérales. La nef centrale soutenue par des piliers carrés et massifs est la partie la plus ancienne. Des vestiges romans sont visibles dans les parties basses de murs.

La tour-clocher est de construction plus tardive, sans doute fin du XIe ou début du XIIe siècle. Elle remplace un ancien porche, devenant elle-même porche d’entrée de l’église. Vers 1230 l’église est agrandie et le toit du sanctuaire est surélevé. Le clocher est reconstruit vers 1574. C’est celui que l’on voit aujourd’hui.

Au XVIe et XVIIe siècles, l’intérieur de l’église est réaménagé au goût du jour: l’intérieur baroque subsistera jusqu’au XXe siècle. Un nouveau pavement est installé au XIXe siècle. C’est alors que la pierre dédicatoire est découverte et redressée pour être mise en évidence sur le mur. Une porte d’entrée est percée dans la tour.

L’église retrouve son caractère roman dans les années 1950. D’importantes fouilles archéologiques ont lieu avant les travaux de rénovation. En 1958 de nouveaux vitraux ornent le sanctuaire: ils sont œuvres de Louis-Marie Londot.

The Saint-Etienne church is a Catholic religious building located in Waha, a village in the Belgian Ardennes, now attached to the municipality of Marche-en-Famenne in the province of Luxembourg (Walloon Region of Belgium). Consecrated in 1050 the building - rare example of typically Mosan Romanesque art - is parish church of Waha.

A commemorative stone of the consecration and the church by the Prince-Bishop of Liège Théoduin of Bavaria bears the date of June 20 (of the year of the incarnation of the Lord) 1050.

In the middle of the 11th century a pre-existing building - probably medieval lordship - was converted into a private chapel with the addition of a sanctuary and two small side aisles. The central nave supported by square and massive pillars is the oldest part. Roman remains are visible in the lower parts of walls.

The bell tower is of late construction, probably late eleventh or early twelfth century. It replaces an old porch, becoming itself porch entrance to the church. Around 1230 the church is enlarged and the roof of the sanctuary is raised. The bell tower is rebuilt around 1574. It is the one that we see today.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the interior of the church is refurbished up to date: the baroque interior will remain until the twentieth century. A new pavement is installed in the nineteenth century. It is then that the dedicatory stone is discovered and straightened to be highlighted on the wall. A front door is pierced in the tower.

The church regains its Romanesque character in the 1950s. Important archaeological excavations take place before the renovation works. In 1958, new stained-glass windows decorate the sanctuary: they are works by Louis-Marie Londot.
