Old communal draw well in the courtyard of the Church of San Francesco della Vigna. in Venice's Castello sestiere (neighbourhood).
Unlike traditional draw wells that relied on ground water, these wells drew water from rainwater that was filtered through sand. At their peak, there were several thousand of these wells; now, fewer than 200 remain. Almost all are now capped.
