The monument is located across from the Giardini Vaporetto stop, along the Riva Dei Sette Martiri walkway. It was created by famed artist Augusto Benvenuti in 1885.
It consists of a bronze statue atop marble plinth.

It dates from 1885, and was originally dedicated to the men of the Royal Italian Army and Navy who provided relief and rescue to those affected by the Po River floods of March, 1882 (monument erroneously lists March, 1885).

The monument originally stood in front of the Naval Stores building, but was moved to its present location sometime in the 1960's or 70's.

The monument text to Alberto Vio reads:

Symbol of the generous
support given to the
Po region by the
People of Venice

The other text (from 1885) reads:

To the Soldiers
Of the Army and Navy
From the Venice Area

The side of the plinth gives two dates:
