The grave of Mary Lewis Jones lies under a tree with those of her parents Able and Patricia Lewis and her sister Sarah Lewis Talley.
The handmade tombstone of Mary Lewis Jones reads as follows:
MARY LEWIS JONES
Born 1816 Died 1841
Dau of Able - Pat Lewis
MD 1990"
The homemade tombstone of her sister Sarah Lewis Talley is adjacent, and the tombstone is rendered in the same handwriting:
"SARAH LEWIS TALLEY
Born 1817 Died 1843
Day of Able - Pat Lewis
MD 1990"
The graves are covered with old bricks instead of a heavy slab of rough-hewn stone, in a nod to Texas grave covering traditions. To Blasterz, these bricks look like they date from around the 1880s, so this may have been the first attempt to mark the graves of these early pioneers.
In early Texas, tombstones were rare. Many people were buried under large slabs of heavy native stone without tombstones. Their families and local residents just knew who was where. Over the decades memories faded and it became necessary to start marking graves.
In 1990 someone with the initials MD created handwritten tombstones for the Lewis and Jones family members who are buried under this tree. The tombstones were made by writing names and vital dates in wet concrete slabs.
