By approximately 1000 AD an agricultural and trading center had developed here. Irrigating perhaps 10,000 acres with hand dug ditches, these people traded as far as central America as evidenced by their use of parrot feathers and sea shells for adornment. In about 1300 AD they constructed the great house which, now covered for protection, is the center of the community and a National Monument. The housing around the central structure would have been seven foot tall, forming a wall around the compound. The houses would have been entered through a hole in the roof, protecting the occupants from the desert wildlife. An undefined event in approximately 1450 AD caused these people to move out of the entire Southwest, leaving their houses, ballcourts and other structures to return to the desert.
