The community of ancient people, whom eventually built the Casa Grande, probably developed around 1000 BC. They eventually developed a massive agricultural settlement, irrigating close to 10,000 acres. Their trading success led to interactions with central American cultures as evidenced by the use of parrot feathers and shells in ornamentation. They also imported, or developed, a ball game and built walled courts for games. The courts were lined with polished caliche, giving them a hard and slick surface. The balls they used were rounded stones about 3.5 inches in diameter. Over 200 such courts have been identified in Arizona. With the development of the Casa Grande nearby, use of the courts seemed to have declined. They can still be identified by the mounds supporting their outer walls. These people all disappeared from the Southwest in approximately 1450 AD. Europeans arrived in the 1600's and Anglo settlers came in the late 1800's. This information is sourced through signage and evidence displayed through the Casa Grande National Monument.
