The Congregational Church of Batavia was dedicated September 1, 1856. It was the second church building for the congregation and was constructed of local area limestone. The church steeple was blown off the church during a violent storm in 1877 and it was not replaced until 1974.
The congregation of this church trace their roots to August 8, 1835, when the Reverend N.C. Clark and Reverend Ralph Gridley organized the Church of the Big and Little Woods with fourteen members in in home southeast of Batavia. The group became affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. For the first five years the Church met in members homes or the school without a permanent pastor. In 1840, fifty-three persons of all demoninations raised money for church building. The new building was dedicated in 1841, and because of the large of nonmember donors the church created a Congregationa Society to include all donor regardless denonimation. In 1842 the church retained their first permanent pastor and in 1843 church members voted to change their affiliation from Presbyterian to Congregational. By the mid 1850's the growth of the population in the area increased the size and resources of the congregation and the members voted in 1855 to construct their second church building the current church building.
