The Old Jail was built about 1690 by the colonial Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colony courts. It was an active jail capable of holding six prisoners. About 1820 it was replaced by a stone structure. It then became part of a barn and for many years it was lost to history.

In 1968 it was rediscovered, separated from the barn, and moved onto the grounds of the nearby Coast Guard Heritage Museum. On July 2, 1971 the jail was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and also included as part of the Old King's Highway Historic District in 1987.
