Highland Light is the first lighthouse built on Cape Cod. Construction was authorized by George Washington in 1797. The original wooden lighthouse was replaced in 1831 by a brick structure. In 1857 present 66' light tower, light-keeper's house, and generator shed were built.

In 1990, the lighthouse was moved 450' west of its original position due to erosion of the 125' tall clay sea cliff which brought the cliff to within 100' of the lighthouse.
