This almost hidden away pillar can be found on Pitarris Hill, a wooded hillock on the eastern edge of Rossie Moor, an area of high ground stretching away south-west of Montrose between the valleys of the River South Esk and Lunan Water. It stands 139 metres above sea level although the high point of the moor is at 153 metres at Rossie School to the south. The pillar is in good condition but views are restricted to the west only as the pillar is situated on the west side of the wood.
STEEPNESS: The only steep approach is from the north from the A934 road where the slope up to the moor is most pronounced. The final route from the track to the west is relatively easy.
TERRAIN: Mostly on roads and tracks. A rutted track passes by over the moor to the west a few hundred yards from the pillar, from here it is over rough pasture land.
ACCESSIBILITY: The track that runs close by to the west, links the A934 to the north at Bonnyton with the minor road that comes up from the east from the A92 and reaches a dead end to the north of Rossie School.
NAVIGATION: The pillar can be hard to locate, but it can be found on the west side of the wood behind a wall and a fence just north of a clump of gorse bushes.
DANGER: Not much other than having to negotiate walls and fences.
