Dunn’s River Falls is a multi-tiered cascade that flows from the mountain above down into the Caribbean Sea. On this day, Ash Wednesday - a national holiday, thousands of people entered the water at the base of the falls and climbed 185' high and 600' in distance along the limestone rocks over which the water of Dunn's River flows. For safety, people hold hand to form human chains which are led by experienced guides. The Whirlpool at the base of the falls is a popular place to begin climbing. Dunn’s River Falls has become one of the most popular attractions in Jamaica.
According to the visit Jamaica Website:
The Dunn's River Falls "continuously regenerates itself from deposits of travertine rock, the result of precipitation of calcium carbonate from the river, as it flows over the falls. The small dome-shaped cataracts are usually associated with thermal spring activity found in limestone caves. This, combined with its location near to the sea, gives Dunn's River the distinction of being the only one of its kind in the Caribbean, if not the world."
