"Amsterdam is the capital and most populous municipality of the Netherlands. Its status as the capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands, although it is not the seat of the government, which is The Hague. Amsterdam has a population of 851,373 within the city proper, 1,351,587 in the urban area, and 2,410,960 in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country but is not its capital, which is Haarlem. The metropolitan area comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, with a population of approximately 7 million.
Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin around a dam in the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries the city expanded, and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19–20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since the annexation of municipality Sloten in 1921 by the municipality of Amsterdam, the oldest historic part of the city lies in Sloten (9th century).
As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and seven of the world's 500 largest companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city. In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city to live in by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and 12th globally on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer. The city was ranked 3rd in innovation by Australian innovation agency 2thinknow in their Innovation Cities Index 2009. The Amsterdam seaport to this day remains the second in the country, and the fifth largest seaport in Europe. Famous Amsterdam residents include the diarist Anne Frank, artists Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh, and philosopher Baruch Spinoza.
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city center. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, the Anne Frank House, the Amsterdam Museum, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 5 million international visitors annually. It is also one of the world's most multicultural cities, with at least 177 nationalities represented."

Full name of the bearer: Amsterdam

Where is Coat of Arms installed (short description) ?:
The coat of arms of Amsterdam is located above the entrance of the museum in Kalverstraat 92.

Material / Design: Painting on plaster

Blazon (heraldic description):
""Coat of arms description:" In red a black stake, with three silver Flanchis (Andrews crosses) occupied. "Two golden red lioned lions as shield holder and in the silver volume the motto in black capital letters" HELDHAFTIG VASTBERADEN BARMHARTIG ", on the shield rests the golden imperial crown. The city flag of Amsterdam corresponds to the blazon (hanging), in horizontal form, all blazon contents are also arranged horizontally. Symbolism: In the 13th century the town was a fishing village belonging to the lords of Amstel. His coat of arms received it in the 15th century. The Great Coat of Arms with the two golden lions as shield holder got by Maximilian of Austria in 1489 the imperial crown on the blazon. In the year 1947 the coat of arms vowise came to it: After the liberation 1945 by the fascism the queen of the city lent the motto "heroic, constantly (also: determined), mercifully" as appreciation of the attitude of the citizens during the occupation in the years 1940 to 1945. Importance of the coat of arms: The exact meaning of the coat of arms is unknown. However, there are several theories that historians consider plausible, but so far can not be substantiated. The two prevailing theories are: The three crosses symbolize the three plagues of flood, fire and plague, which threatened Amsterdam The crosses were used to identify fords on old trade routes. The coats of arms of surrounding cities also show a similar arrangement of crosses: the coat of arms of Amstelveen counts four, and of Ouder-Amstel five St. Andrew's crosses. Another theory says that the three crosses should remind of the apostle Andrew. As evidence is that the city took the coat of arms in the 15th century. The Roman-German king and later Emperor Maximilian I gave the city in 1489 the right to add his crown to the coat of arms. This was thanks for the financial support that he, as heirs of the Burgundian Netherlands, had been granted by the city during his dispute with Dutch nobles. Legend has it that Maximilian, while living in the city, recovered from a serious illness after praying in one of the churches and had the city coat of arms decorated with a crown. Maximilian's crown was replaced after its coronation to the Roman-German emperor by the imperial crown. At the time of Emperor Rudolf II, who had a new crown made, which later became the Austrian imperial crown, they adapted the shape of the crown. The lions as shield holders were added in the 16th century. Queen Wilhelmina took the attitude of the citizenry during the occupation by the German Reich in World War II and especially the February strike after the removal of the first Jews from Amsterdam in February 1941 as an opportunity, the city with the saying "Heroic, Vast Berry, Barmhartig" (heroic, Steadfast, Merciful). This motto came in 1947 in the coat of arms. The coat of arms is omnipresent in the city, as it graces not only the typical in Amsterdam bollards (Amsterdammertjes), but also manhole covers, public buildings and many logos." https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amsterdam#Wappen_und_Wappenbedeutung
