The Douglas Bay Horse Tramway is the only remaining tramway in the world and the stable for the 'Tramers' is the last working stable in Douglas.
Whilst at the time the Tramway was estblished working horses and their stables were an everyday sight on the streets of Douglas and other towns, today the only horses seen on the streets of Douglas are those which pull the trams along the promenade during the summer season; the Trammers. The Trammers are stabled in the Tramway Stables which are behind Tramway terrace at the northern end of Queeen's Promenade.
There is an information sign mounted on the wall just inside the entrance to the Stables and this tells the history of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway and the Stables from 1876 to the present day. This sign when refering to the stable states that 'Today it remains a working original Victorian stable tucked away in a modern urban environment, complete with smithy, feedstock rolling machinery, hay loft and cobbled wash yard...'
The sign acknowledges the assistance of Manx National Heritage and the iMuseum in complying the Museums displays, including this sign.
Established in 1876, and operated from 1902 until 2015 by Douglas Borough Council, the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway celebrated its 140th anniversary on 7 August 2016.
