The Santa Fe Refrigerator Despatch, begun in 1884, was a subsidiary of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. Their cars were refrigerated with ice, and later dry ice, to maintain proper temperature for their perishable loads. In 1929, 43% of the California citrus crop was transported in these cars, which were nicknamed "reefers".
Between 1935 and 1950, Santa Fe rebuilt its refrigerated cars and this particular car, a Class Rr-39 was a rebuild. In 1971, the last ice-cooled reefer was retired.
This car, SFRD 7918 is located next to the M-K-T railroad depot in Vici.
