Bell Tower of St. George's Church on Upper Church Street in Douglas has a ring of 12 traditional English Style change ringing bells with Tenor being of 18cwt 2qrts 24lbs in E.

The Towers Bells are rung on Sundays between 10:00 to 10:30am and the Tower team of bell ringers practice on Tuesday evenings between 7.30 and 9.00pm.

The Bells in the Tower are rung by rope and wheel also known as the traditional English Style.

Before December 1999, the Tower had only held only a single bell save for a set of tubular bells that had not been used for many years.

The single bell in 1999 had been cast in 1956 and weighed approximately 600cwt. It was hung in a wooden frame and had a wheel but was being struck by an electric chiming hammer.

In 1998 all the bells in the Cathedral had been recast and rehung and this prompted the then Vicar and Archdeacon of Man, the Ven. Brain Partington to start a project to install a completely new ring of bells in St. George's. The St. George's Church Millennium Fund Raising project ultimately raised over £100,000.

In April 1999 it was found that due to broadness, thickness and squatness of its well buttressed walls this tower was ideal for the installation of 10 bells rather than the originally planned 8 bells. A twelve bell frame was installed to allow for the later addition of two bells for a full 12 bell ring. The 1956 became the six in the new ring.

The work to install the 10 bells was completed in December 1999.

Thanks to a substantial legacy received in 2001 permitted the ring of 12 was completed with the addition of two trebles also two of the towers ringer paid to have the 1956 bell part exchanged and thus by Summer 2001 the tower was fully equipped with its ring of 12.

Details of all 12 bells can be found on the om Lancashire Association of Change Ringer Sodor and Man Branch webpage (visit link)
