FR La fontaine des Neuf-Canons est une fontaine située à mi-hauteur du cours Mirabeau à Aix-en-Provence (France), à l'intersection des rues Nazareth, en provenance de la vieille ville, et Joseph Cabassol du quartier Mazarin.

Datant de 1691 et attribuée à Laurent Vallon1, la fontaine des Neuf-Canons a été inscrite au titre des monuments historiques en 19292.

En fontainerie, le "canon" est la partie de la conduite projetant le jet d'eau à l'extérieur.
La particularité de cette fontaine est d'en comporter neuf : au canon du sommet, s'ajoutent quatre canons pour chacune des deux vasques superposées. Ces neuf canons, en forme de queue de carpe, permettaient d'assurer un débit d'eau important, capable d'étancher la soif des troupeaux de moutons venant à y passer.

En effet, l'origine lointaine de cette fontaine remonte à l'existence d'un point d'eau attesté dès le XIIe siècle hors des remparts de l'ancienne ville. À cette époque, une servitude autorisait les troupeaux de moutons en transhumance entre la Crau et les Alpes à venir s'y abreuver.
Au XVIIe siècle, la margelle basse du bassin, ainsi que la longueur de son périmètre, a été conçue pour cet usage.
Au XXe siècle, son importante superficie représenta une gêne pour la circulation automobile, à tel point que, lors de la libération d'Aix en 1944, un char américain ayant emporté un des quatre lobes du bassin, ce bras ne fut pas reconstruit et que son lobe opposé fut, à l'occasion de cet incident, supprimé3.
EN The fountain of Neuf-Canons is a fountain located halfway up the Cours Mirabeau in Aix-en-Provence (France), at the intersection of Nazareth streets, coming from the old town, and Joseph Cabassol from the Mazarin district.

Dating from 1691 and attributed to Laurent Vallon1, the fountain of Neuf-Canons was listed as a historical monument in 19292.

In the fountain, the "gun" is the part of the pipe projecting the jet of water outside.
The peculiarity of this fountain is to include nine: at the top of the gun, are added four cannons for each of the two superimposed basins. These nine cannons, in the shape of carp tails, made it possible to ensure a large flow of water, able to quench the thirst of the flocks of sheep coming to pass there.

Indeed, the distant origin of this fountain goes back to the existence of a water point attested since the 12th century outside the ramparts of the ancient city. At that time, an easement authorized sheep flocks in transhumance between Crau and the Alps to come and drink there.
In the 17th century, the lower edge of the basin, as well as the length of its perimeter, was designed for this purpose.
In the twentieth century, its large surface area was an inconvenience for automobile traffic, so much so that, when Aix was liberated in 1944, an American tank having carried off one of the four lobes of the basin, this arm was not rebuilt and that its opposite lobe was, on the occasion of this incident, suppressed3.
