FR Malgré la terrible répression qui s’est abattue sur les « Vaudois », installés dans le Luberon depuis le XV° siècle, la réforme de Luther, de Zwingli puis de Calvin se propage en France et trouve un terrain favorable en Provence.

La naissance de la communauté protestante d’Aix est associée à la présence du pasteur Claude Boissier en 1557.

La Provence échappe aux horreurs de la Saint-Barthélemy perpétrée à Paris le 24 août 1572.

L’édit de Nantes, signé le 13 avril 1598 par Henri IV, n’est enregistré, par le parlement de Provence, que le 23 janvier 1601. Les libertés qu’il accorde aux protestants sont réduites.

Louis XIV met un terme brutal à cette parenthèse et dès 1659 les synodes nationaux sont supprimés.

Entre 1760 et 1787 une certaine tolérance s’installe grâce à l’action des philosophes. L’édit de Versailles dit « édit de tolérance » est signé par le roi Louis XVI en 1787. Il se borne à l’état civil, mais « autorise l’espérance’".

Au lendemain de Marengo, Bonaparte décide de garantir la paix religieuse.

Le XIX° siècle voit un clivage s’opérer :
* les protestants dits « évangéliques » qui veulent s’en tenir à la doctrine du XVI°siècle, centrée sur la méditation de la Bible
* les protestants dits « libéraux » qui insistent sur la confrontation de la foi et de la raison.

Le temple de la rue de la Masse à Aix est inauguré le 23 juillet 1876.

À Aix-en-Provence, l’assemblée générale de la paroisse réformée évangélique de la rue de la Masse se prononce contre le projet d’union au sein de l’Eglise Réformée de France (ERF) mais une minorité fait sécession. Elle se réunit dans un hôtel, puis dans un local rue des Bernardines et finit par acquérir en 1955 l’ancienne synagogue de la rue Mazarine, aujourd’hui le temple de la rue Villars.

Après-guerre, s’enclenche un processus de rapprochement et de communion avec l’Eglise Évangélique luthérienne de France, qui aboutit en 2013 à l’union des deux Eglises : l’Eglise Protestante Unie de France.

L’Eglise protestante unie du Pays d’Aix développe aujourd’hui des liens avec les autres religions dans le cadre de Croyants dans la cité.
