Seul point d’eau du bourg au XVe, elle est définitivement adossée à un authentique mur romain en 1756 par Georges Vallon. Elle est ornée d’un médaillon de Marcel de Provence. Sa source appartenait à un certain monsieur Espeluca, d’où son nom.

La fontaine Espeluque : au centre du bourg Saint-Sauveur, sur l’ancienne Place de l’Archevêché, est adossée au mur romain méridional de la cathédrale et date de 1618. Elle fut à plusieurs reprises, changée de Place et doit son nom à ses eaux qui proviennent d’une source appartenant à un certain Espeluca. Celui-ci légua ses biens au chapitre et laissa aux moines la jouissance de la source. Deux pilastres soutiennent un entablement orné en son centre d’un médaillon à l’effigie de l’historien Marcel Provence, mort en 1952. On distingue encore des vestiges de mascarons figurant des têtes d’hommes, rongés par le temps.

Cette fontaine est située à l’extrémité ouest de l’ancienne Place de l’Archevêché (elle-même sise sur l’emplacement de l’antique forum gallo-romain). Son nom vient du mot provençal « espeluco » qui indique « une grotte », « une caverne ». A l’origine, l’eau qui desservait cette fontaine sortait d’une grotte située sur les hauteurs de la ville, dans l’actuel quartier Saint-Eutrope. Elle trouverait ses origines aux environs de 1376. Elle a subi de nombreuses transformations au cours des siècles et aussi « des déménagements ».

Actuellement, c’est une fontaine « adossée » à un mur romain. Son « massif », en pierre de Bibémus, est bordé par deux « pilastres ». Derrière le massif, donc invisible du promeneur, se trouve « la boîte à eau ». Elle se remplit et déverse l’eau, dans le bassin rectangulaire, en pierre dure par deux « canons », qui sortent de deux « mascarons » à tête de lion. Au- dessus, entre les pilastres figure, en médaillon de bronze, le buste « engagé » de Marcel Provence, écrivain aixois de la première moitié du XXè siècle, célèbre pour ses ouvrages sur Aix et la Provence. Ses alentours sont très ombragés par les ramures des platanes de la Place.
