The Golden Gate Strait is the opening from the Pacific Ocean into the San Francisco Bay. The Golden Gate Bridge spans this strait and connects Northern San Francisco to the Marin County Headlands.
Construction on the bridge started on January 5, 1933. The bridge was open to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937. At the time it opened it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It is currently the 8th longest in the the world and the second longest in the US.
The bridge has six lanes of automobile traffic US Route 101/CA 1 with designated lanes for pedestrians and bicycles. It's total length is 1.7 miles and it's longest span is 4,200 feet.
