The Municipal Square in Crewe was redeveloped with the relocation of the War Memorial from Market Square in 2006, where it had stood since 1924. The square was later renamed Memorial Square in 2014.

A plaque to commemorate the renaming is located in a garden near the War memorial in the square. The plaque was unveiled by Councillor Michael Jones, on 11th November 2014, in the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War. A giant poppy, which was modelled and carved in Southern India, was also unveiled as a lasting monument to those who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom and way of life.

The service was led by the Rev Ken Sambrook, Associate Priest of St Mary’s Wistaston with St Luke’s Willaston.
A reading was given by Councillor Michael Jones, Leader of Cheshire East Council, before the Last Post was played and a two-minute silence was observed.
