The memorial stone commemorates the centenary of the visit to Crewe by Lord Baden-Powell.

The inscription on the stone reads as follows;
'Lord Baden Powell

Scout and Guide
Movements

Scouts of Cheshire
at a Rally at the
Alexandra Athletic
Ground
Earle Street, Crewe
on 25th March 1911
This stone
was placed in 2011
to mark the
Centenary of the event'

Baden-Powell visited Crewe on 25th March 1911, to review the Cheshire scouts during a rally held on the Alexandra Athletic Ground, the land where the Grand Junction Retail Park now stands.

The site originally chosen to place the stone was on the corner of Earle Street and Rainbow Street, a location that was on the route travelled by Baden-Powell in 1911.
The stone was originally unveiled on Remembrance Sunday in 2011 by Edward Timpson MP, as a commemoration to recognise the 100th Anniversary of his visit.
The stone was moved to Crewe's Memorial Square in 2015, as this was considered to be a more fitting location where the stone could be treated with respect and appreciated by the public.
