In the 1990s, Canada Post featured several architecturally significant buildings from across Canada on their high-value definitive postage stamps. This handsome $2.00 stamp, issued in 1994, shows the front elevation of the Old Provincial Normal School located in Truro, Nova Scotia. It has been a registered Provincial Heritage Property since 1998.

“Normal school” is an outdated term for a teacher’s college. It refers to the goal of training teachers in what we might call the “norms” for an approach to education and establishing curricula. Nova Scotia’s Provincial Normal School opened in 1855 and lasted until 1997 when it was merged with several other universities in the province.

In 1878, the normal school moved into its new building – the one seen on the stamp. It was designed by Halifax architect Henry Frederick Busch in what has been described as the Second Empire Style. The building was home to the normal school over 80 years (and a couple of name changes). In 1961, the school changed its name again (to “The Nova Scotia Teachers College”) and moved to a more modern facility a short distance away. After some recent renovation, the building became the headquarters for the Colchester-East Hants Public Library.

And what happened to that tower that can be seen above the building’s cupola on the stamp? It was struck by lightning in 1951 and never replaced.
