If you’ve ever picked up a newspaper in New York City there’s a good chance you may have handled a product from this plant as newsprint has been its primary commodity (and the eastern U.S. has been a primary consumer) since it first opened in 1925. Back then it was called the International Paper Company of Newfoundland Limited. The facility has changed hands several times over the years and is currently owned by Kruger Inc. of Montreal and is officially named Corner Brook Pulp & Paper Limited. Canada is one of the world’s leading producers of newsprint and this plant can supply a quarter-million metric tons per year.

This is not the first Newfoundland stamp to show a paper mill. A large plant at Grand Falls appeared on a stamp issued in 1910 but that mill has been shut down. Nothing is certain and with waning demand for newsprint in its service area, that fate may await the Corner Brook facility too. But as of this writing, it’s alive and well.

Corner Brook maintains a small park dedicated to navigator, surveyor and cartographer, Captain James Cook. Though mostly associated with Tahiti, Australia, Hawaii and other locations in the Pacific, Cook spent five years (1763-68) surveying the coast of Newfoundland. His maps were so accurate they were still in common use a hundred years later. The small park overlooks the Humber Arm of the Bay of Islands and though it has nothing to do with pulp and paper, provides the perfect vantage point for this philatelic photograph.
