Né dans une famille modeste, Alexis Godillot est devenu très riche et célèbre grâce à la fourniture de chaussures à l'armée française.

Fidèle de Napoléon III, il découvre Hyères en pleine expansion touristique vers les années 1850/1860 et à l'instar du baron Hausmann, à Paris, il va embellir la ville en créant de larges avenues plantées de palmiers et bordées de villas luxueuses.

Face à l'église anglicane, au rond-point de la fontaine, se dresse cette fontaine monumentale de 1881, due aux architectes Michel Lienard et Mathurin Moreau. Les statues représentant Acis, Galatée, Amphitrite et Neptune ont été fondues au Val d'Osne (Haute-Marne), dont Godillot est actionnaire.

Elle est surmontée d'un lampadaire.

A l'origine cette fontaine était alimentée par un réservoir muni d'un bélier hydraulique, situé sous la place Saint-Paul. Maintenant, l'eau circule en circuit fermé.

Born into a modest family, Alexis Godillot became very rich and famous thanks to the supply of shoes to the French army.

Faithful to Napoleon III, he discovered Hyères in full tourist expansion towards the years 1850/1860 and like Baron Hausmann, in Paris, he will embellish the city by creating broad avenues planted with palm trees and lined with luxurious villas.

Opposite the Anglican church, at the roundabout of the fountain, stands this monumental fountain of 1881, due to the architects Michel Lienard and Mathurin Moreau. The statues representing Acis, Galatea, Amphitrite and Neptune were melted in Val d'Osne (Haute-Marne), of which Godillot is a shareholder.

It is surmounted by a lamppost.

Originally this fountain was fed by a tank equipped with a hydraulic ram, located under the Place Saint-Paul. Now the water circulates in a closed circuit.
