This Church replaced the first church on this site which was alongside the towns market.
The market place area of the town was redeveloped in the latter part of the 19th Century. Ridgeway Street which runs alongside the Church was built as part of the redevelopment. The Municipal Buildings and the town's library were both built as part of the redevelopment as was the Market Hall which dates from 1899.
Designed by John Loughborough Pearson the work on its constuction was completed under the direction of his son Frank Loughborough Pearson as John died in 1897.
Building work on the new Church commenced in 1895 but was not completed until although mysteriously the John's belfrey and tall steeple were never built. The result is that the church appears to be a strangely unbalance and rectilinear.
The Church is today the centre of Manx Anglo-Catholism in the tradition of the Oxford Movement.
