The display of antique wringer washing machines in the Nelimark sauna demonstrates that the small building was more than just a bathing facility. The primitive structure was used for laundering clothes, cooking meals and baking bread, and smoking meat as well as being utilized as a guest room and bathing facility.
The Nelimark homestead Finnish sauna was built in the 1930’s and is thought to be the largest of its kind in the community. The historical building was built from locally harvested pine trees using hand-hewn logs with double notched joints in the corners. The sauna is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The museum is open to the public June -September, Thursday's - Saturday, 10a.m. -4 p.m. and by arrangement, but the washing machines can be seen through the window when the museum is closed.
