The island of Goreé was first occupied by the Portuguese, who established there a small naval base for their operations along the West African coast (15th Century). Only in 1627 the island was conquered by the Dutch who built there Fort Nassau but shortly after they decided to return it to the Portuguese. They conquered it again after ten years, then French came, then the British, the French, the British again. Finally in the 19th Century the French got it again, and kept it until the independence of Senegal in 1959.
The fort was built in 1852, on the north end of the island. It never saw in action and after the Second World War it was used as a jail. Nowadays it can be visited by the public, hosting a small History museum dedicated to the island.
It's a great place to enjoy the views to Dakar and the surrounding Atlantic ocean. There are some old cannons placed there.
