Welcome sign of the recreational place Middelhagen with a carved figure group.

Middelhagen was first mentioned in 1250 in a document.

The place was until 1326 part of the Principality of Rügen and then the Duchy of Pomerania. With the Peace of Westphalia from 1648 Rügen and thus also the area of Lancken-Granitz became part of Swedish Pomerania. In 1815 Middelhagen came as part of Neuvorpommern to the Prussian province of Pomerania.

Since 1818 Middelhagen belonged to the district or administrative district Rügen, only in the years 1952 to 1955 it belonged to the district Putbus. The municipality belonged thereafter until 1990 to the circle Rügen in the district Rostock and became in the same year part of the country Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The district of Rügen, which has been designated as such since 1990, opened in 2011 in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen.

On January 1, 2018, Middelhagen will merge with Gager and Thiessow to form the new community Mönchgut.
