In Newport along Memorial Boulevard, and on Mars in the southern hemisphere, are named features that honor the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus.
The feature in Newport is a full-sized statue of Christopher Columbus on a stone pedestal. Columbus is shown standing up and holding a globe in his right hand, and is holding up an anchor with his left. Engraved in the pedestal is the following:
"Christopher Columbus
Discoverer of America
October 12, 1492
Erected by the
Italian Colony of Newport
Rhode island
October 12, 1953"
On Mars, there is a crater that is called Columbus Crater, named after the explorer. The crater is located in the southern and western hemisphere (wherever they determine where 0 deg. longitude is) at S 29.9 and E 194.04, and it is 112 km in diameter. The crater has received some attention - mineral deposits have been detected that indicate that the crater bottom may have been filled with water.
Christopher Columbus lived from about 1451 to 1506. Under the flag of Spain, he sailed west with three ships, the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria - depicted on plates surrounding the statue. He made four voyages to the Caribbean Islands, the Bahamas, and central America, claiming the lands for Spain. Of course, there is controversy concerning the claims that he was the first European to Discover America (the Viking landed in Newfoundland), and also has been noted for his bad treatment of the indigenous people where he landed.
