During World War I, the French Military temporarily occupied the Isle of Corfu. This was designed to allow the defeated Serbian army and civilians a path away from the advanced Austro-Hungarian Axis.
The nearby Achilleon Palace was commandeered and converted for use as a French military hospital. Those French soldiers who died there, 209 in total, were interred in this cemetery.
This is the first and more restrained of two Memorials in the cemetery. It consists of a recessed area carved into stone.
On it, written in French is:
A
La
Memoire
De
Ceux Qui Sont Mort
Pour
La Patrie
La Liberte
et le Droit
English translation:
To the Memory of those who died
for
Their Country
Their Freedom
and their Rights
The other is a large wooden cross located at the base of the cemetery, opposite the entrance gate.
Access to the cemetery is by following the signs from the nearby road. There is a paved road of sorts, but it is not recommended unless you have a high-clearance vehicle or bike/motorbike.
