During World War I, the French Military temporarily occupied the Isle of Corfu. This was designed to allow the defeated Serbian army and civilians a path away from the advanced Austro-Hungarian Axis.

the nearby Achilleon Palace was commandeered and converted for use as a French military hospital. Those French soldiers who died there, 209 in total, were interred in this cemetery.

In 1995, the French Government commissioned this memorial. It was constructed, and in turn dedicated by the crew of the French Frigate Jean Bart.

This is the second and more auspicious of two Memorials in the cemetery. The first is a stone cairn located at the head of the cemetery, near the entrance gate.

Access to the cemetery is by following the signs from the nearby road. There is a paved road of sorts, but it is not recommended unless you have a high-clearance vehicle or bike/motorbike.
