CRITICISM OF
BRISBANE'S LIBRARY
The State public library in
William-street came under fire
for the fiftieth or the hun-
dredth time in Parliament last
week (writes our Brisbane cor-
respondent).
How the old building stands
up to all the criticism is a
mystery; the masonry of which
it is constructed must be of far
better quality than the litera-
ture it houses.
Mr. Taylor, Opposition mem
ber for Hamilton, who is a
very well-read gentleman, de-
clared that Queensland's lib-
rary services had no parallel in
the English-speaking world —
but unfortunately the wrong
way. He added his piece to
the mountain of approbrium
lavished on the William-street
edifice, by saying, "You give
the librarian money to buy
books, but no place to put
them." Our little old library
no doubt is pretty poor as a
building, but its contents are
deserving of far more criticism.
Some of the volumes on the
shelves must have been there
for close on half a century.
They must have been donated
in the first place, for it is a
fair bet that no librarian would
have been insane enough to
buy them. Brisbane could put
up with its library if the books
were up to standard. Reform
would then quickly come
about, as the crowded rooms
would force the Government
and the city council to provide
new space.
