In Newport, in the median of Memorial Blvd, is a statue of Christopher Columbus, which has an iron fence surrounding it with plaques in relief.
The statue is located less than 100 ft east of the intersection with Bellevue Avenue, and the statue faces this intersection.
The statue is of Christopher Columbus and shows him standing with a globe in his right hand and holding an anchor up with his left. The iron fence runs around the pedestal.
Plaques are fixed on each side. One side has a relief of the 'Nina,' one of the ships that Columbus had on his first journey, and reliefs of crosses on either side. Another has the 'Pinta,' another of his ships, with crosses on either side. Another plaque has a more intricate design, showing a group of European men on the right side with Native Americans on the left, and the ships visible in the background. On the fourth side is the Santa Maria.
