This Nneo-Renaissance structure was constructed in 1863 following a design by Ignác Vojtech Ullmann, overlooking the former chain bridge leading to the left bank of the Vltava from the end of the present-day Revolucní Street.

Its site was originally occupied by a small summer palace, known as the Belvedere, constructed at the bequest of Count Franz von Wallenstein (Valdštejn) in 1715 but destroyed by retreating French soldiers in 1742.

In front of the chateau, the first cable-car line in the Czech lands was installed in 1891 to mark the occasion of the Czech Jubilee Exposition.

Like the later cable car on Petrín Hill, it worked on the principle of water balance, but because of an insufficient source of water, it was converted to electric power by the famed engineer František Križík in 1903. With two lines of a gauge of 100 cm, the rail line ascended a height of 38.3 metres in only 109 metres of length. The cable cars were removed in 1922.

The Letná Chateau was also where, in 1891, the final stop of Križík's first electric tramline was located.

The route of this single-rail tram, the first ever in Prague, led as far as the Exposition Grounds, and in 1893 was extended to the Belvedere at the foot of Prague Castle. Operation of Križík's electric tram ended in 1900.

At present, the one-storey chateau is ušed for a variety of cultural and social events.
