Riley Ranch Nature Reserve is located in northwest Bend along the east side of the Deschutes River. The Reserve is comprised of 184 acres which were formerly used as a ranch and purchased by the District in three acquisitions in 2010 and 2013. Relatively untouched in some places, the land features open meadows, juniper and pine forests, unique lava flows, cliffs and the river’s rocky canyon.
The Riley Ranch Nature Reserve is the most geologically interesting park in the Bend Parks and Recreation District. In the last 75,000 years the Deschutes River has cut a nearly 180 foot deep canyon exposing a variety of volcanic units ranging in age from 75,000 to 4,000,000 years old.
