The tombstone for Harold DeWitt Benbrook rests in the family plot at Old Rockwall Cemetery in Rockwall TX, and reads as follows:

"In memory of our son
HAROLD DeWITT BENBROOK
Who died in France in the
Service of hos country
Mar 30, 1919 Aged 25 years, 5 mos.
Co. A M.T.C.M.R.S. Unit 309"

On Ancestry, we found Private Benbrook's embarcation record fromwhen he was shipped overseas wth his units. He left New York City, NY on 17 Sep 1918 on the "EMPRESS OF RUSSIA" passenger liner (which had been requisitioned as an Army troop transport ship).

With the war ending less than a month later, surely his parents expected him to come home a hero.

Instead, in the book "SOLDIERS OF THE GREAT WAR" that we also found on Ancestry, he is listed as "Dying of Accident," but elsewhere on Ancestry, records show him as dying of disease.

We did find his return from France on board the US Army Transport Ship "WHEATON", which was a mortuary ship. The WHEATON departed Cherbourg on 1 May 1921, and reached Hoboken NJ on 20 May 1921.

PVT Benbrook served in Co. A of the Motor Transportation Corps' Motor Repair Service, assigned to Unit 309.
