Die Kreideküste im Nationalpark Jasmund ist der größte und bedeutendste geologische Aufschluss Norddeutschlands. Denn sie stellt einen Schnitt durch 70 Millionen Jahre Erdgeschichte dar und besteht keineswegs nur aus Kreide, sondern auch aus Sand, Lehm, Mergel, Findlingen, und die chaotisch anmutende Schichtung zeugt von längst vergangenen, gewaltigen Ereignissen. Heute sorgen kleine und große Uferabbrüche immer wieder für Aufsehen. Diese Küste gibt Einblick in die jüngere Erdgeschichte, vor allem darüber, wie die Insel Rügen entstanden ist.

The chalk coast in the Jasmund National Park is the largest and most important geological outcrop in northern Germany. Because it represents a section through 70 million years of earth history and is not only made of chalk, but also of sand, clay, marl, boulders, and the seemingly chaotic stratification bears witness to long-ago, tremendous events. Today, small and large bank crashes always cause a stir. This coast gives an insight into the recent history of the earth, especially about how the island of Rügen originated.
