Fr : A l'emplacement de la cathédrale Saint-Gatien actuelle, il y avait au IVe siècle un premier sanctuaire de dimension modeste, puis un deuxième au VIe siècle. Enfin, un troisième, de style roman, est construit vers 1125. Détruit par plusieurs incendies, l'édifice est relevé et transformé grâce à la générosité de saint Louis (1236). De cette époque date le chœur de style gothique rayonnant. Une fois le chœur et le transept terminés, le XIVe siècle voit la nef s'élever à son tour. Elle ne sera achevée qu'après la guerre de Cent Ans, tout comme la façade qui adopte un style gothique flamboyant. C'est aussi au XIVe siècle que la cathédrale est définitivement consacrée à saint Gatien.
Lors de la première moitié du XVIe siècle, les tours, si caractéristiques de la cathédrale de Tours, reçoivent leur couronnement en style italien. Deux décennies plus tard, pendant les guerres de Religion, les nombreuses statues des portails sont détruites par les protestants. À la Révolution, Saint-Gatien devient temple de la Raison.
La cathédrale de Tours possède une magnifique verrière dans son vaste chœur et deux belles rosaces de style rayonnant, dans les bras du transept. L'une d'entre elles sert d'arrière-plan à un somptueux buffet d'orgue e du XVIe siècle..
EN:: En - On the site of the present Saint-Gatien cathedral, there was in the fourth century a first modest sanctuary, then a second in the sixth century. The cathedral of Tours has a magnificent glass roof in its vast choir and two beautiful rosettes of radiating style, in the arms of the transept. One of them serves as a backdrop to a sumptuous organ buffet e of the sixteenth century.
