Life on the Texas frontier was so hard - and the tombstones of the Kirby children who died before the age of 2 proves it.

These tombstones for brothers Robert and William Kirby feature doves of peace with olive branches that are inset in medallions.

The tombstones are in a line of babies born to this family, none of whom made it far into childhood.

The waymarked tombstones read as follows:

"[dove of peace]

WILLIAM R. KIRBY
Born
Nov. 3, 1872
Died
Jan 20, 1874

Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven"

and his older brother, next to him:

"[dove of peace]

ROBERT B KIRBY

Born
Jan 14, 1867
Died
Sept 7, 1868

Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven"
Kind of dove: Dove with olive branch
