Mackinac Point was an ideal location for a lighthouse, but it took many, many years for the appropriate government funds to be made available. On March 2, 1889, Congress made $5,500 available for the construction of a fog signal. It wasn't until March 3, 1891, that Congress made the $20,000 available to construct the light signal.

A red Fourth Order Fresnal lens was installed and displayed for the first time on October 25, 1892.

The Mackinac Bridge opened in 1957. The brightly illuminated light served as a navigational aid and the lighthouse was decommissioned. It is now cared for by the Mackinac State Historical Parks.
