Mrs. Cowan's headstone is a modern gray, granite marker with floral detail, and this inscription:

Katie Mae
Cowan

Oct. 1, 1899
Apr. 1, 2001

Significant events that occurred in her lifetime:

1899 - The Second Boer War begins in South Africa.
1909 - William Howard Taft becomes the 27th President of the United States.
1919 - Edsel Ford takes over from his father as the head of the Ford Motor Company.
1929 - The Vatican city-state is established, ending sixty years of conflict between Italy and the papacy.
1939 - The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum opens in Cooperstown, NY.
1949 - Harry S. Truman is sworn in as President of the United States for his first full term, despite his having been "defeated" by Thomas E. Dewey.
1959 - Fidel Castro takes over in Cuba.
1969 - Monty Python's Flying Circus debuts.
1979 - President Jimmy Carter fends off a killer rabbit while fishing. Look at the bones!
1989 - Mel Blanc, the Man of a Thousand Voices, dies at age 81. That's all, folks.
1999 - Wayne Gretzky retires after a lengthy career in both the World Hockey Association and the National Hockey League.
2001 - The Taliban begins destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas. We'll hear from them again this year.

Be aware that the main cemetery gate -- unlocked -- is off of CR 452, and the route to the cemetery crosses pasture land. The cemetery is visible in the distance, but there are a few dirt tracks to guide the way. It goes without saying that visitors should check for livestock up front, and if they're present, leave them alone. They'll just stare anyways, and will move in the opposite direction if spooked. Be certain to close the gate behind you, and it's a good idea to put the chain back on to make certain that the cattle don't get out. If it's muddy, your best option is to walk to the cemetery, as you'll have a lot of fun getting your vehicle unstuck.
