In a display case with Dr. Seuss memorabilia located between the first and second floors of the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum is an Orpheum No. 1 Banjo owned and played by Dr. Seuss. A sign next to the banjo gives it's history:

Banjo, Orpheum No. 1
Once Belonging to Theodor Geisel
Made by Rettburg & Lange, New York, NY
Gift of Elizabeth N. Cahill

This banjo was used by Theodor Geisel and dates
to his years spent at Central High School (later
Classical High) in Springfield. Ted participated
in many activities while in school, including
writing for the school newspaper and the school
yearbook, participating in plays and music clubs,
and briefly playing soccer. Like so many
students, Ted collected autographs from his
friends before graduating, in this case he had them
sign the banjo as members of the class of 19201/2.
