Near the site of Port Arthur (a former prison for convicts from England), a mass shooting took place, which was the deadliest in Australian history. The shootings continued from the café into the gift shop, and beyond.
The Memorial consists of a pool, a garden, and the building in which the shooting took place. The gunman escaped the scene, but was captured the next day, and sentenced to life imprisonment after his trial. The roof of that Broad Arrow Café was removed, and the contents also removed, to stand in silence over the site.
