Set in a walled courtyard off St. Andrew Street is a bronze freize of passing figures by William McElcharen. It's a crowded street scene of people going about their business, seemingly in a hurry. Most are oblivious to the others, but some are interracting. There is both anonymity and intimacy. The inclusion of women is rarely seen in his work. It's frozen and flat and dynamic at the same time. This is heighted by its installation in a space that is unsually empty and deserted.
Born in 1927 in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1947 he (McLecharan) graduated from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and was awarded the Lieutenant Governor's Medal. During his early years as a woodworker, McElcheran focused on liturgical art as he began carving church furniture and pews. As the chief designer for Bruce Brown and Brisely Architects, he planned and designed 23 churches and university buildings.
