This curious brick tower stands close to the boundary wall between Victoria Park and St Mary’s Rest Garden (a former cemetery). This informative plaque nearby suggests that the tower was once an access shaft into the Belk Culvert Tunnel, part of Nottingham City's drainage system. Later it came to serve purely as a ventilation shaft for the culvert.

The plaque reads:
CURIOUS BRICK TOWER
This is
the curious little brick tower.
It is believed that the tower
was originally an access shaft
to the beck culvert tunnel
during its construction, though
it later became a ventilation
shaft for the culvert, foul air
being carried up the shaft and
out through the grille at the top.
