On an information plaque by the side of this cannon (to the left of the bench, when facing the bench) is the following information:
'THE BELLEISLE WAS SUNK
AND THE CAPTAIN, FRANCOIS THUROT,
WAS WASHED UP ON THE SHORE
AT KIRK MAIDEN, WIGTOWNSHIRE
ON THE SHORE OF LUCE BAY.
THUROT COTTAGE, BRIDE. BUILT 1809.
INCOPRORATES TIMBERS FROM THE BELLISLE
AND THE BRIDGE AT CRANSTAL
IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN BUILT ON CANNON
JETTISONED FROM THE BELLEISLE.'
The Marechal de Belle-Isle was one of four ships in the French naval squadron which attacked the Irish Coast. Belle-Isle was a forty-six-gun frigate which was built in 1757. The captured French sailors were first sent to Ramsey the nearest large town in the north of the Island.
