Thomas Edwin received his 'Mates Certificate of Service', 3 years before his untimely death, on 20 March 1851, when he was aged 20 years. The Certificate shows that Thomas Edwin had served for 6 years as Apprentice Mate in the British Merchant service in the Foreign Coasting Trade.
