The following information comes from the Alturas Chamber of Commerce website:

The community was originally called Dorris Bridge after the Dorris brothers who settled here in 1870. In 1876 the community was renamed Alturas, which is Spanish for “Valley on Top of a Mountain.” The current post office was dedicated in 1997.
